Bollywood is a Hindi Film industry located in India, that produced thousands of movies in its history of over 100 years. The first silent Hindi film “Raja Harishchandra” was released in 1913 and in 1931 was released the first Hindi sound film ” Alam Ara ” which was a major success on the box office. Annualy Bollywood produces more movies than any other film industry in the world – that are watched and popular, not only in India but also in the whole world. The period from 1940s to the 1960s is the “Golden age” of Hindi cinema beacuse some of the most succesfull Hindi films were made during this period. This Bollywood movie is the most succesfull and the highest grossing Hindi movie of all time. “Sholay” was released in 15 august, 1975 – the Independence Day for the Indians. The movie that become a big blockbuster was directed by Ramesh Sippy, and in the star cast were included Amitabh Bachhan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri, Sanjeev Kumar and Amzad Khan. The story of the friendship between Gabbar, Jai and Veeru is all time favorite for the Indian audience, and won an award for “Movie of millennium” by BBC.
This black and white movie was released in 1960, but it took 15 years to complete. “Mughal-e-Azam” is a true master piece of Indian cinema and it was the first highest grossing film until Sholay. In 2004 the movie was re-released in color. In “Mughal-e-Azam” which is the most beautiful love story in the Indian film industry, appeared great actors like Dilip Kumar, Prithivi Raj Kapoor and the most gorgeous Indian actress Madhubala. The song in the movie, ‘Jab pyar kiya to darna kya’ became very popular and one of the most loved Indian songs.
Mother India (1957)
The movie “Mother India” was released in 1957, and it was nominated for Oscar for Best foreign language movie. This wonderful movie starring the brilliant actress Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rejendra Kumar and Raj Kumar was made to show the power of the Indian woman and become one of the blockbusters at its time.
“Guide” was another huge blockbuster in the Indian cinema, directed by Vijay Anand. This movie was relesed in 1965 and is known for the wonderful music composed by S.D. Burman. In the movie based on the novel “The Guide” by R. K. Narayan, appeared Dev Anand and Wahida Rehman. ‘Guide” won seven Filmfare awards.
“Awaara” was released in 1951, and was a huge box office success. This movie was nominated for Grand Prize of the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. “Awaara” was directed by Raj Kapoor who also plays one of the the leading roles in the movie. In the another leading role appears Nargis. The movie became overnight sensation in many countries, and it’s one of the most successful movies of all time. This is also the first movie to have a dream or fantasy sequence.
