Vintage ads that will shock you!

Fairy Soap

Fairy Soap

Fairy soap had maybe the most offensive and racist ad ever. The vintage poster ad from 1860s, portrays little white girl aksing an Afro-American girl: “Why doesn’t your mamma wash you with fairy soap?” This was a suggestion that Afro-Americans were dirty. The slavery was legally abolished in 1865 – so it’s no wonder that Afro-Americans were not treated equally by advertisers then.

Dacron

Dacron

In 1970′s Dacron had a very sexist poster add showing a picture of a women on the floor with a rug for a body. The man is wearing Mr. Leggs slacks and is standing on her head and saying ” It’s nice to have a girl around the house”.

Love Cosmetics

Love Cosmetics

The slogan of Love Cosmetic’s ad “because innocence is sexier than you think“ is very disturbing and un appropriate advertisment. The shape and the colors of the perfume bottles and the sexualized child make it hard to bellieve that once this kind of advertising was considered for appropriate.

Drummond Sweaters

Drummond Sweaters

The sexism in this ad that ran in Esquire in 1959, is so obvious and it’s not even related to the product being advertised. The poster saying “Men are better than women” showed two men standing on a cliff, while a woman dangled from a rope beneath them.

Van Heusen

Van Heusen

This Van Heusen ad for ties from 1960′s, has a strange message “Show her it’s a man’s world” and shows the women as slaves. The poster showed a woman on her knees serving a man breakfast.
